City Kicks Off Commercial Recycling Program |
April 14, 2010
Annapolis, MD (04-13-10) – Mayor Joshua J. Cohen has announced that the City, an environmental standard-bearer in Maryland, is kicking off a once-a-week commercial recycling program at no additional taxpayer expense.
The City Council voted last year to start a commercial recycling program, and Mayor Cohen’s proposed fiscal year 2011 budget reflects its implementation. The program will first be offered to downtown businesses, with the expectation that it will be extended across Annapolis.
Participating businesses will pay an annual fee of $163 for the first container; each additional container is $41.50 annually.
“I am very excited about kicking off this program,” Mayor Cohen said. “It’s something that has been discussed for years but never implemented. When you think about the reams of paper that are generated by offices or the thousands of bottles discarded by bars, it’s clear that commercial recycling program is an idea whose time has come.”
Those who want to participate in the program can contact the Department of Public Works at 410-263-7970 or fill out the application. Complete details on the program are available.
The list of recyclables collected is the same as the residential program. Permitted items include: aluminum, tin and steel cans; empty aerosol cans; aluminum pans; glass bottles and jars; telephone books; mail; cardboard; pizza boxes; and plastic utensils and buckets. |

Annapolis, MD (1-15-10) Following Gov. Martin O’Malley’s charge to help the distressed in Haiti, Mayor Joshua J. Cohen is requesting that anyone wishing to donate or provide assistance in Haiti should contact the Center for International Disaster Information.
The surge in international donations comes in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck near Port au Prince on Jan 12, 2010.
“In times of great need, kind people from around the world want to help by giving their money, or giving their time. I am grateful that so many of these compassionate individuals and organizations can be found in Annapolis,” Mayor Cohen said.
